ATT VÄNDA I

Gallery Stene 2019-2020

Stene Projects presented Att vända i by Torbjörn Johansson, the artist’s debut exhibition at the gallery. The exhibition consisted of five paintings executed with cultured milk on linen canvas.

Johansson’s practice is grounded in painting, color, and light as tools for visual and spatial thinking. Material and site are always central to the work. Over many years, through exhibitions and independent public works, he has explored color’s relationship to the human senses—not only vision, but also touch and our capacity for spatial orientation. His aim is to expand the experience of color as materiality, medium, and embodied perception.

For an extended period, Johansson has worked with cultured milk as a painterly material. As a flowing and unpredictable medium, it lends itself to large-scale formats. The drying process—marked by crackling, skin formations, and subtle shifts—becomes an active component of the work, where time, material, and chance converge in the formation of the image.
