Day & Night

Gradska Galleria, Belgrad 2024

The exhibition is grounded in a fascination with the idea that night, at night, is its own kind of day. Where does time go during the night? We sleep, we dream, we lie awake, or we stay up. In the city, night is easily lost — drowned out by streetlights, passing cars, and the sounds of neighbors.

In the Spanish mountains, the night was dark. We watched the stars. It was quiet, yet other sounds emerged — animals, small or large, we could not tell. Moonlight woke us in the middle of the night and illuminated the room.

We want to speak about night and day: two very different phenomena, yet the same thing. The same place — and yet not. We rotate. The shadow cast by the sun becomes a thin, elongated cone stretching into the universe. Everything else is day.

At the center of the installation is the Light Sphere — a large mass with a surface capable of carrying light. It captures light from our day and brings it into our night. Events that remain invisible in daylight appear when the light is switched off: a video projection of a slowly wandering sun reflection reveals itself. We never have time to witness the entire journey before night returns.

A camera obscura is activated as darkness once again fills the space. The bright daytime world outside is mirrored into the night-black interior. Day and night are displaced, shifted, and reassembled at will.

By moving between these states, we seek to give attention to a condition that is constantly present yet rarely noticed. Night and day carry different meanings for us as human beings — both essential, both inseparable
