Källskär
Källskär is a residency report developed by south east / south west during a stay from June 20–25, 2022, focusing on exploratory investigations of water, air, and transitional environments
The stay at Källskär formed part of the ongoing collaborative project south east / south west, which explores natural forces and the uncontrollable as co-creators within an artistic process. The residency began without a fixed plan. We brought an underwater camera and chose to relate directly to the surrounding water environment.
Over time, our focus shifted toward the intersection between underwater space, the water surface, and the air above. We investigated how materials, bodies, and perception behave at the threshold where water meets air—and vice versa. Through a series of experiments, we photographed and filmed these encounters, observing what occurs in the transitional zone between different material states and environments.
The results from this period function as exploratory material that may later inform more precise expressions or works. The location itself—the guest accommodation, the proximity to the harbor, the inner harbor, the pier, and the open sea—played an essential role in the experience. Walking the paths around the island allowed us to understand the site as a whole.
The residency was highly rewarding and has motivated us to apply again. With the experience gained, a future stay would allow for more targeted planning and a more deliberate selection of materials. For the short duration of this visit, the accommodation proved well suited—simple but functional.
